She was a resident of Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Helen was a Torpedo Factory artist from 1983 – 2010. She was among the founders of both Fiberworks and the Bead Society of Greater Washington. An author and teacher as well as an artist, Helen also taught for the Smithsonian Associates Program.

Daniel Banes, 95, a former director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Pharmaceutical Sciences, died April 24 of heart complications. His wife of 72 years, Helen R. Banes, 92, a local fiber artist and jewelry designer, died April 1 of cardiac arrest.
Both died at their home in Chevy Chase. Their deaths were confirmed by their daughter Susan Banes Harris. Dr. Banes and Mrs. Banes were born in Chicago and moved to the Washington area together in 1948.
